I am a recent graduate of Cardiff University with a BA Honours degree in English Literature. I have had a degree of experiene within a classroom setting, both primary and secondary. I was given the opportunity, for a few hours a week, to act as a classroom assistant to English lessons for both a Year 9 and a GCSE class. Not only was I was again able to witness the construction of lesson plans, but aid in exam preparation on a one to one basis and on occasion, be allowed to act as teacher, leading discussion ,encouraging debate and offer a friendly interaction with pupils and parents outside the classroom setting.

Since the completion of my degree I have offered my services as an English tutor to both GCSE and A Level students in my local area. I have worked on a one to one basis with a selection of students, aiding their understanding and analysis of the texts, whether classic or contemporary, as well as improving their understanding of literary theory and structural essay writing. I have made the texts accessible to those I teach, applying both the modern social and cultural relevance to such works as Shakespeare's 'Othello,' with great feedback from students and their parents.

I have also done a considerable amount of volunteer work with the Samaritans, working with young adults grieving the loss of a loved one or suffering physical and emotional abuse at the hand of a once trusted relative or partner. Meeting these deeply troubled, but highly articulate people has only heightened my commitment to the teaching profession. I feel as a teacher one is not simply there to impart academic knowledge, but to provide support.
